Your Minnesota questions, answered.

Do you deliver anywhere in Minnesota?

Yes. Our coverage includes the whole state.

Do I need a building permit?

Probably, but check who enforces the code where you live. The State Building Code applies everywhere in Minnesota. Cities and counties in the Twin Cities metro must enforce it; elsewhere, many cities and some townships and counties enforce it and others do not. The state keeps a lookup of who enforces the code for each area.

A one-story detached storage building of 200 square feet or less does not need a building permit under the state code, but local zoning still applies. Most carports and garages are larger.

What snow load does my building need?

Ask your building official for the ground snow load at your address; it is higher in the north than the south. Also tell us where snow drifts on your property and whether a taller roof could dump snow onto the new building.

How deep does the frost go?

Deep. Minnesota rules set the minimum footing depth for frost at 5 feet in the northern zone and 3½ feet in the southern zone. That matters if you pour a slab with footings or a foundation. Some detached accessory buildings may use other foundation options, so ask your building official what applies to yours.

Can a truck reach my place in spring?

Maybe not during spring load restrictions. When the ground thaws, MnDOT and local road authorities lower weight limits on many roads, often from March into May depending on the frost zone. A loaded delivery truck may need to wait. Check the current restriction dates before you pick a delivery window.

How do delivery and installation work?

We review your building, location and site details before confirming timing. You prepare a level site and arrange required local approvals. Snow storage, steep or narrow drives, gates and where a truck can turn around can make delivery harder. Frozen ground can delay anchor installation. A quote request does not reserve an installation date.

Do I need to call 811 before installation?

Yes. Contact Gopher State One Call before work starts. The 48-hour waiting period begins at 12:01 a.m. the day after your request, not counting weekends and holidays. Tell them where the building will sit and that ground anchors will be installed. Tickets are good for 14 calendar days.

Lines you own, such as power to a garage, are not marked through 811.

My property is on a lake. Anything else to check?

Yes. Lakeshore lots have shoreland rules that limit how close buildings can sit to the water, how much of the lot can be covered and sometimes building height. The county or city zoning office enforces them. Ask before you choose the building location.
